*72 Inmate Phone Scam

There is a nationwide, recurring phone scam where inmates dial random numbers and when someone answers the inmate attempts to have the victim activate the call forwarding feature of their phone by dialing *72 and the target number (i.e. *72 715-555-5555) . Once the phone has been forwarded, the inmate can place an unlimited number of phone calls from the jail that will then be billed to the victim.

Please take these steps if you believe you are a victim of this scam:

• Make sure your phone is no longer set to forward by dialing *73.
• Call the Inmate Call Center Monday - Friday between 7am and 3pm to lodge a complaint; 1-713-961-0147.
• Contact your telephone service provider and advise them of the fraud.
• If you desire, call 1-800-984-8800 to have calls originating from the Harris county jail blocked.
